2020 a year of problems in the vineyard
Collaboration
Mr. Enrique Pascual García CHAIRMAN
Mr. Alberto Tobes Velasco Experimentation and Trials

Online sessions have been held with experts and managers of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, sessions in reference to the agricultural problems caused by the pandemic in 2020.
In this appellation, ideas and solutions to solve the situation could be found, with positive results. In crisis situations, innovative approaches are also possible.

Examples of vineyards not affected by the pandemic (Viña Tondonia, Haro, Rioja).

In some vineyards and in some appellations (Ribera del Duero, for example) it was possible to carry out the typical spring pruning, leaf removal and green pruning. The situation is specific to each case, in the same way that the abandonment of tillage was also undertaken due to special situations.

Examples of vineyards affected by the pandemic (Haro, Rioja).

Untreated vineyards in Haro (Rioja) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The impossibility of carrying out green pruning work in April, sulphiting and skimming, as well as the presence of excess wine stock in the cellars due to the closure of bars and restaurants during 2020 were decisive in the management of the crisis and in the cessation of vineyard work this year. For many Rioja vineyards, 2020 is the first time in history that there has been no harvest.
